Nope. Trap card #2, activated: There's no evidence that Gurathin is from the Corporation Rim.
The fanon that Gurathin is CR comes from a single line in Exit Strategy: Ratthi says, "It came to Preservation packed into the hold of that much bigger ship, the one thatā€™s become the station, with our grandparents. Well, not Gurathinā€™s grandparents, he came later." Personally, I think there's even room here to interpret Gurathin as being born on Preservation as the child of immigrants, if Ratthi's use of "he came later" is taken as an imprecise synecdoche for Gurathin's family origins as a whole. Given that this is Ratthi "I'll get the cases" "I'm a biologist, I don't understand this money stuff" being sentimental and distractable in this scene, it's a fair cop.
Either way, "came later" does not mean "from the Corporation Rim." There are plenty of other places in the setting that are neither Preservation nor the CR. As early as Artificial Condition another set of non-corporate polities is mentioned, Rami's Divarti Cluster; it's not clear whether Don Abene's homesystems in Rogue Protocol are corporate or noncorporate, but she certainly has no "bone-deep" fear of SecUnits; Fugitive Telemetry meanwhile expounds on travel routes through Preservation Station stretching elsewhere "outside the Rim." The Rim is only one group of places that a human could be from.
No, people are mixing up Gurathin's backstory with Human One's. It's Human One who is the former corporate contract slave, and SHE is the one who acted rationally on her bone-deep, knee-jerk fear of SecUnits in shooting Murderbot in the back. She's not the only corporate-background character to interact with MB, thoughā€”even if we did want to headcanon that Gurathin did hail from the CR, we might just as reasonably compare Gurathin's "We just have to keep you immobilized" to Ras and Eletra's "Just tell it to take orders from us" and "It seems like you don't know how to control it" in Network Effect. Their corporate fear and prejudice and desire for control certainly does not stop them from thinkingā€”with clear self-interest, if not rationally or clearly.
People can headcanon whatever they like, of course. By all means, if giving the backstory of a strong and fascinating female character to Gurathin tickles the fancy, then I encourage people to do that on their own time. But this post is my post, and I am not obligated to care about the things people made up outside the text in my analysis of the text.
Finally, let me address a point that's cropped up more than once now. We all know it's not easy to set aside prejudice and in-group bias and fear of the unknown to make rational or kind decisions. We all live in the real world and many of us have personally had to wrestle with the effects of unthinking fear and prejudice, both others' and our own. The Murderbot Diaries is a series that speaks to us as full thinking adults on this matter, that's why kindness is presented as a rational choice, not merely a morally right one. The series acknowledges that it's hard, but at the same time doesn't allow you to wallow in your own struggles to the exclusion of others'ā€”it still asks you to try to see other people clearly for who they are and what they need, and use what agency you have to do right by them. Gurathin fucked up in this scene, then later stepped up and learned better, and rather than focusing over-much on how hard he had it we should learn from his example and do better.
Gurathin is not only wrong, his argument is fundamentally irrational
Gurathin's argument in ASR:
We need to immobilize this SecUnit stat, because it's going to kill us.
I know it's going to kill us because its logs show that it's rogue. If there is no way to control it, then it is dangerous to us.
It is controlled by the Company to sabotage us. "The missing hazard report, the missing map sections. The SecUnit must be part of that." If it wasn't, that would be a coincidence, which is unbelievable.
This SecUnit has gone rogue and killed people in its charge before. It may do so again.
PresAux's counterargument:
It may be rogue, but that doesn't logically mean it will kill us. "The fact that the Unit has been acting to preserve our lives, to take care of us, while it was a free agent, gives us even more reason to trust it." (Volescu)
Someone may be sabotaging us, but that doesn't logically mean it's the Company or our SecUnit. "There were only three SecUnits for DeltFall in their specs, but there were five units in their habitat. Someone is sabotaging us, but I donā€™t think our SecUnit is part of it." (Ratthi)
If the SecUnit was trying to sabotage us, then why would it tell us about the combat module sabotage and shoot itself? (Bharadwaj, Overse)
The SecUnit believes it went rogue as a result of malfunction, and that hacking its governor module would prevent a repeat occurrence. Confirmation of its sincerity comes from the same logs that Gurathin accessed for his arguments. (Volescu)
Gurathin's counter-counterargument:
Well it gave itself an edgy nickname

The Ithaca Saga: What IS a Monster, how itā€™s presented, and when fictional S.A is integral to the plot.
So -
This was originally a response to @ / anniflamma which you can still find on my page unedited. But with the new discourse surrounding the suitors, I figured I could retool it as a standalone essay to express a topic Iā€™ve been trying to pin down for a while now; What exactly does the mean when they call a character a monster? What do they do, do the reasons matter, and how does the subject of rape affect how the fandom consider some monsters more unforgivable than others? When IS rape in fiction ā€œnecessaryā€ and why such questions defeat the purpose of exploratory creative works.
In this post we will discuss all the major antagonists of the Epic Musical, Penelopeā€™s agency, the label of Monster and the types of moralizing one might do when faced with uncomfortable subjects in fiction and how to prevent these feelings from blinding is about what a story is trying to say.
For those who read my original response; thereā€™s new content to read here and posts that will be referred to, if youā€™d like to give it another gander!
Thank you,
Letā€™s begin;
I think making the threat of rape explicit was very much needed, actually.
Itā€™s come to my attention that there are people here and on tiktok who are so uncomfortable with the subject matter in this CENTURIES old tale that theyā€™re both refusing to accept that it plays an important part in the original poem and musical, AND are bizarrely insisting that Jorge should have magically done away with it to make more palatable.
This is beyond juvenile - itā€™s a clear sign of media illiteracy.
What, if I may ask, do you think it means when you say that the suitors are going to force Penelope to choose one of them to marry.
You may respond that they want to take over Ithaca. That they want to be king. But take a moment to consider what forcing a woman to marry one of them will entail. I wonder if you think that one can divorce the idea of sexual violence in this plot.
It would beā€¦unfathomably difficult to do so. Because you CANT. There is an implicit threat of Penelopeā€™s will breaking and having to have unwilling and reluctant sex with any one of them in the event she just gave up and picked one.
This isnā€™t a storyline that depicts Penelope of being willing to marry any of the suitors. She is WAITING for her husbandā€™s return. Even if he doesnā€™t, she doesnā€™t WANT to marry someone else. Her consent is being violated by the very merit of them being in her palace, eating her food, and threatening her son.
Theyā€™re doing ALL OF THIS in order to bend her will in the HOPES of raping her as a bonus to becoming king of Ithaca.
My contention is the use of ā€œunnecessaryā€ when it comes to this trope in media - though themes of rape can be uncomfortable, to call them unnecessary HAVE to meet certain criteria. Which this specific instance doesnā€™t.
By observing various responses, itā€™s clear that the threat of rape went completely over manyā€™s head in this instance of the story. So I very must appreciate Jorge making it SO clear that itā€™s upsetting.
This part of the odyssey, and the musical, is very much about Penelope suffering under the threat of assault for YEARS. In the same way Odysseus was (a thing I touched upon in my calypso essay, in terms of his ambiguous situation in the musical) - itā€™s a parallel that works as both Antinous and Calypso were introduced (regardless on your personal interpretation of what Calypso did or did not do, but thatā€™s neither here nor there).
It has taken an emotional and psychological toll of either spouse. And the kicker is that neither of them are freed of this situation on their own - they are both rescued by outside forces. Athena/Hermes helps free Odysseus; Athena/Odysseus will help free Penelope.
The looming threat of rape is SO necessary that it helps the catharsis factor we feel toward PENELOPEā€™s story - itā€™s nothing to do w Odysseus who by now is a force of nature as big as Poseidon, his actions happen TO her, and itā€™s up to her to decide (per ā€œwould you love meā€ ) what she feels about that. She can very well reject him! Sheā€™s suffered under male violence for YEARS. Odysseusā€™s violence and those of the suitors toward her are basis enough for the comparison.
Do all men, including her husband, become violent? Does she want to put up with that? We know from her song snippets that she is NOT a woman that simply succumbs to the Rape Rescue trope as suggested by ignorant consumers of media - and I call it ignorance and consumerism because thereā€™s a clear lack of engaging with the material in an intuitive way. Itā€™s just blind consumption - as if one bites into a burger and find a pickle, which you personally donā€™t like, and having it removed - you canā€™t treat ART that way .
Penelope is a very intuitive and emotionally intelligent queen. Stop infantilizing her. Her own husband suggests that like the suitors, his actions make him just as bad as they are and presents his hope as being understanding if she rejects him on those grounds. But those ARENT her grounds. She has full autonomy and can make a distinction FOR HERSELF whether she considers her husband equal to the monsters who have harmed her.
So letā€™s talk about the ā€œMonsterā€ label as it is presented on the entire musical.
Some have erroneously suggested that Odysseus has been given an out to commit cruel and ruthless deeds with out ā€œgood justificationā€ - he does it for his family,, after all!
Which is a misunderstanding of everything every antagonist of each saga has done.
Letā€™s start with the Troy Saga: Odysseus has killed a BABY. He made the choice to put his family over this child. Everything he has done and lost would be for literally NOTHING if he hadnā€™t, as even if he had killed the suitors and regained everything - the GODS themselves would make sure that child would come to an aged Odysseus and slaughter him, Penelope, Telemachus and his entire kingdom when he came of age.
Odysseus STARTS as a monster. We have been rooting for the man who laid Troy and its children asunder. As such, the label of a monster is NOT so much a morally subjective label - it simply a thing that IS. Or rather. It is what ALL the antagonists ARE, but itā€™s hardly a condemnation of any of them.
(Peep that one of the first lines Ody says refers back to in the Vengeance Saga is what he did to Troy - he STILL views his actions over there as unforgivable, so not even HE will ever see himself otherwise, the problem was that he felt so guilty over it that he became a detriment (a different kind of monster) to his friends and family when they were all guilty of the same thing and trying to get home.)
ALL of the antagonists have a ā€œgood reasonā€ to kill ALL the soldiers (who again, have looted and slaughtered the Trojans) Odysseus and his close friends included. Whether your AGREE is almost irrelevantā€¦because the story itself proposes that itā€™s irrelevant.
The next saga introduces the cyclops: his motivation is primarily that his FRIENDS the sheep have been slaughtered. You can argue in the scope of things, you canā€™t empathize with this but itā€™s his good reason. Heā€™s the son of a god, and these sheep are all he has. His friends, who matter to him as much as Polites does to Ody, are being taken and slain, he is being drugged, attacked and maimed. VERY much was Ody goes through in the final saga. And even so.
The Cyclops is antagonistic to the party, heā€™s a monster who feels justified killing to avenge his killed sheep. A monster is a thing he IS.
As Poseidonā€™s son, he asks his father to kill the 600 men who have ransacked his home and beat on him. He doesnā€™t view his father as being wrong for this. In the same ways Ody and Telemachus donā€™t waste any time addressing the slain suitors later on. Poseidon is a monster of a god - itā€™s just a thing he is. Not even being stabbed 100 times is enough to repay the harm heā€™s done - to most everyone, not just Ody, but we are not asked to quantify that. Just live with it.
Circe has killed NUMEROUS men over the years. HER ā€œgood reasonā€ is that something bad happened to her nymphs when she let a stranger in her islands. She doesnā€™t even promise that she WONT kill in the future - her song ends w the suggestion that the world may continue to need her to puppeteer! Because she does not exist to be ā€œredeemedā€ - she is somewhat more reasonable and capable of empathy than even the likes Athena, who being a greater and more powerful god, does not have the one on one affection to her follows as Circe does. Sheā€™s a monster! Itā€™s a label, a thing she IS.
So here we begin to ask; is it LOVE that gives people the capacity to do monstrous things? Because the cyclops loved his sheep friends, Poseidon loves his son, Circe loves her nymphs.
And by now youā€™re saying now wait a minute didnā€™t the Underworld Saga go over this? Why yes it did! And Odysseus decides to ā€œbecome the monsterā€ - he already IS one by the standards of the cyclops, Poseidon, Troy - they all see him as a monstrous being. But he accepts that, after being one in Troy, he held back and ruined the lives of his men, making him a monster to THEM. His ā€œgood reasonā€ for being so!
He attempts very hard to be the General he was in Troy and prioritize them going home, sparing no sympathy towards his enemies - but in the Thunder Saga we see the gods further push him to be completely self-serving like they are. The sun gods cows are harmed, he sends Zeus in relation - his ā€œgood reasonā€ being his friend were personally harmed.
Odysseusā€™s ā€œgood reasonā€ is ultimately decided to be the same good reason he had to slaughter the Trojans - to get back home to his wife and son.
Like with the Cyclops sheep, Circeā€™s nymphs, The Sun gods cows, and Poseidons son, WE are shocked and made to feel some type of way about Odyseussā€™s reasoning. Surely HIS personal suffering shouldnā€™t cost the lives of ā€œinnocentā€ menā€¦but it does! It surely does.
He is a monster. Itā€™s just a thing he IS.
Now, Odysseus spends the next seven years under the thumb of ANOTHER monster. And through calypso own reasoning, despite her tragic backstory, her ā€œgood reasonā€ she IS a monster. Sheā€™s incapable of understanding why she wasnā€™t reciprocated. Incapable of empathizing with a human because as a god who has spent eternity alone, it stands to reason she, like all the other monsters mentioned before, prioritizes HER personal suffering over everyone elseā€™s. In some versions she either kills herself or does spend the rest of eternity alone. Sheā€™s a monster. This is a thing she IS.
Now what the HELL does all this have to do with the suitors?
Odysseus started the musical a MONSTER. Heā€™s worn different hats, but it is what he IS. Itā€™s a label, not a moral critique.
ALL of the antagonists of every saga have a ā€œgood reasonā€ NONE of them are ruthless for ruthlessness sake! Itā€™s immaterial whether you agree with them or not, but to understand them for what they are.
Odysseus is the antagonist of the ithica saga, md while the suitors are the antagonist to him and his family, we see their fate form THEIR POV
The suitors could not have been depicted as ā€œrude youthful menā€ like Telemachus. That Odysseus killing them should be shocking - a frightening condemnation of everything heā€™s done and became. But I ask once again - in what world are the suitors not implicitly set up as monsters?
Because again. They arenā€™t being rude for rudenessā€™s sake! They arenā€™t JUST eating Penelopeā€™s food and sleeping in HER house. Them threatening Telemachus, as you propose, isnā€™t ā€œenoughā€ of a reason because they didnā€™t wake up one day beefing w this boy. Everything they do is for the express purpose of sexual violence towards the Queen of Ithaca, who upon assaulting, will make it so any one of them will be King.
You canā€™t separate the one from the other. You get a nonsense scenario. The whole REASON theyā€™re there in the first place.
Even if you create a fanfic where 108 men wake up one day and raid the palace to slaughter the royal family with no intent of sexually assaulting either (because remember Telemachus is also the subject of Hold Em Down) and then fight amongst themselves to be the next king, but then isnā€™t that STILL a ā€œgood reasonā€ for Odysseus to slaughter them?
Now I hear what you may be asking: but if all the monsters of the sagas, Odysseus included, have a ā€œgood reasonā€ even though we might not agree with it, what kind of monsters does that make the suitors? Surely and clearly THEY arenā€™t doing what theyā€™re doing for noble reasons.
I consider them akin to the 600 men who died under their captains command.
Because, as stated before. Odysseus views his actions in a Troy as his start of monstrosity. He did all that to finish the war and do back home. He ruined the lives of all Trojans.
So did his soldiers.
The only moment in time (even in the deleted songs) that the bulk of them repent about the war is in terms that it left them without food.
But glasses! They were just following orders!
Which is what one of the suitors suggest in song 38. Their serpents head is dead, THEY were just going with Antinousā€™ flow, they are innocent.
Like the 600 soldiers, the 108 suitors sacked a home that wasnā€™t theirs and harmed a wife and child - does them being the queen and prince pale in comparison to the hundreds of wives and children slain in Troy? Homer is a genius to ask us to see these parallels for what it is.
The suitors ARE monsters. That is simply what all 108 of them are. In the context of the story itself, their intent is to break Penelopeā€™s will, commit martial rape, and become king of Ithaca. They arenā€™t there for kicks, they arenā€™t ignorant boys, theyā€™re socially accepted adults abusing the hospitality rule with an express purpose.
So a GROUP of monsters are slaughtered by ANOTHER monster, and though in this instance we can argue itā€™s morally justifiable, it doesnā€™t take away from Odysseusā€™s fear of being rejected by his family. He has ruined the lives of the Trojans, his men, AND multiple gods! To get to this point. He IS a monster. And the story asks US, through Penelope, if he is still worth loving.
Seeing Penelope as merely his reward is so backwards and bizarre. Itā€™s very clear that bad faith interpretations of her are based on objectifying her erroneously, when the narrative presents her as a fully developed character.
In the story both in the poem and the musical that the suitors ARE NOT her guests. She is being sequestered against her will.
In what world could the suitors be ā€œjustā€ murderers and notā€¦.very clearly rapists? Itā€™s BUILT into their motivation. You would have to change the very FOUNDATION of the Ithaca plot line and Penelope herself??? To say nothing of Telemachusā€™s role!
Whatā€™s the proposal here? That Penelope invited these suitors? Thatā€™s sheā€™s actively looking for a replacement husband? Okay, again, that changes literally SO MUCH of the story, but wouldnā€™t that put Telemachus in a position where he too has to change? Does he resent his mother for doing this? Is he helping his dad out of spite or because he wants him back? How are we meant to view Penelope in this radically new and hip Epic the Musical? Is she savvy and in her right to choose a new boo? Okayā€¦okay, so thenā€¦.you want Odysseus to be the only one unchanged and go axe crazy becauseā€¦.hes jealous? He kills these upstanding menā€¦.curtain call. Thatā€™s all folks!
Absurdity at its finest. You throw Penelopeā€™s agency out the window. Her weaving and unweaving her loom is meaningless or simply doesnā€™t happen. Or maybe itā€™s that she wakes up one day and goes hey yknow what I WILL consider marrying one of these guys with no sense of dread and fear. Oh wait Oddy has killed then all! Never mind me feeling unsafe a week ago, heā€™s done a Bad.
Crazy.
Itā€™s justā€¦not going to end up making Penelope look like a well written female character if Jorge has done what you wanted! THAT would make her a mindless prop. You seem to think she is one, and thatā€™s not the case. Historically, in fact!
She is a whole person in the poem and musical whether you understand it or not. You would have to argue so thoroughly why she sucks and let me assure you - there are entire DISSERTATIONs on why youā€™d be incorrect.
So, no.
No, you CANT take away the rape in Penelopeā€™s storyline. It matters ALOT. Itā€™s the ROOT of the matter! Could old school vegetales make something up thatā€™s more to your sensibilities? Maybe at its peak but god, I couldnā€™t possibly come up with a draft that could reflect that. I wonā€™t even try.
The rape aspect of the Ithica Saga isnā€™t unnecessary - itā€™s INTEGRAL to the plot. It can make you uncomfortable, but itā€™s BUILT into the royal familyā€™s suffering whether itā€™s explicit or not! And it SHOULD be explicit! Because you seem to think because it usually isnā€™t, that the rape aspect isnā€™t there!
I cannot imagine coming to this kind of conclusion.
They are not random men going on a siege of the palace one day - you cannot ā€œsanitizeā€ the SUITORS because by the very merit of them calling each other THE SUITORS there is an implicit threat of sexual violence. Because Penelope doesnā€™t WANT suitors. She rejects them. Theyā€™re already violating her consent.
How the FUCK to do you censor the rape when itā€™s in every action they take? And I know what youā€™re saying: but didnā€™t Jorge censor the rape aspect that both Circe and Calypso commit towards him?
Further reading: suggests that ALLUDING to it is not the same as censoring, that it still FITS the PURPOSE of these characters in regards to Odysseusā€™s suffering under them. That after ambiguity, it is NECESSARY to make the rape aspect CLEAR in order to create both catharsis and MEANING at the end of the narrative. The THEME is still respected and present, it is not REMOVED. Please consider reading the linked follow up that answers this question.
In short.
Itā€™s truly a matter of using oneā€™s goddamn head when it comes to view fictional depictions of rape as ā€œnecessaryā€ - because though some depictions can be presented BADLY, to suggest they should not EXISTS lends itself to rape culture. It silences the voices of victims. Its representation denied. Donā€™t talk about it, donā€™t even suggest it, because rape is bad.
Itā€™s an action that happens to people. Itā€™s a crime in civilized society. Itā€™s a physical and psychological trauma that has always been. It happens daily, in fact. Though epic the musical is a source of entertainment for you, it doesnt exist solely for that purpose.
When Homer included it within his original oral story, he did so as a storyteller trying to get his audience to philosophize, not simply have fun.
I think weā€™ve come to some abysmal conclusion that men canā€™t write about these topics when we have historical evidence of at least one man knowing what the hell heā€™s talking about. And Jorge has done a phenomenal job even when he hadnā€™t depicted blatantly.
If youā€™re uncomfortable to the point of not wanting to see it at all, that is entirely on you, art and creative works allow us to explore these topics safely. Whether itā€™s from the POV of the assailant or one of the victims commenting on it, fiction is one of the only places we can talk about it and learn about ourselves in a way it doesnā€™t harm real people.
I donā€™t even want to BEGIN discussing all the losers who are still harassing Antinous fans or people who genuinely enjoy his song despite/BECAUSE of the subject matter. Its purpose in the story matters more than you policing how itā€™s presented and how itā€™s consumed. No amount of people enjoying themselves will take away the foundational POINT of the character and song. Itā€™s perfect the way it is.
Like with the chaos that calypso discourse wrought, you cannot control how people treat a NOT REAL CHARACTER or the songs they sing - if it bothers you that one type of fictional villian is treated one way or another, it is on you to find likeminded people instead of going into others faces and pretending to be a self-righteous prick. You can throw whatever buzzwords you want, the CONTEXT these characters live in has nothing to do with how others want to play with them. If you donā€™t understand the difference between the two instances, fandom is certainly not for you and will not be changed to suit your sensibilities.
To end this post, I want to thank those who further asked me questions and bounced ideas off with me, and wow, what a phenomenal ending to a grandiose musical. I hope I can see it live, animated, streamed, developed into a game etc whatever form it takes now that the concept albums are published
Thank you all for engaging w my workšŸ’–

Quick Response To Some Nonsense
**Spoilers For All Of Arcane**
Hello all, no fancy lead in today just a response to some recent stances taken on Cait/Vi, in particular their breakup. Of course this is simply my interpretation, but I felt strongly enough seeing it that it was worthy of a refutation. As I am keeping this centered on the stances themselves and my responses I won't be doing my usual laying the groundwork, so if you have any questions feel free to ask or check out my other stuff! Let's dive in!
The primary reason Caitlyn shuts down and does what she does is because Vi took the choice away from her after they had agreed on it. And that Caitlyn had lived a life always struggling to be able to make her own choices because of her parents: Okay, on the surface, totally fair. Yes, they had agreed on a plan as to how this had to go down and Vi stopped Caitlyn from carrying it out. However, there is SO MUCH MORE going on here.
First and foremost, Vi's reasons for stopping Caitlyn at this point are irrelevant. Because of Isha. Listen folks, If you have watched these characters all the way to this point, and you honestly feel that either of them would intentionally do something that risks the life of a child, I just cannot agree with you. Caitlyn has only shown herself to be a kind and caring person ever since we meet her. These folks wanted to use two factors to show that Vi would not have cared about Isha being hurt to prove that it was all about Jinx.
A- Vi doesn't have a particular adverse reaction to Renni's son dying
B- Vi doesn't seem to care about hitting Isha and doesn't stop when she does
A: Renni's Son-
This is the boy killed who is working in the Shimmer lab that Jayce and Vi attack. Jayce accidentally kills him with a blast from his hammer. So regarding the allegation that Vi doesn't seem to particularly care. Context, as always, is our friend folks. Jayce is backing out because of the death when they were quite literally starting their attack on Siloc's entire operation. So what does Vi actually say-
"You've always been a part of this, you just never had to look it in the eye. One dead kid? There's hundreds more where he came from, thanks to Silco. And thanks yo people like you, who stuck their heads in the dirt. "
Jayce leaves, Vi very clearly stands over the body and sighs, her eyes wet with tears. And yes she gets back to business. Because as she said. This is about so much more than one dead kid.
B: Hitting Isha-
Okay, I love Isha to. But this is not the first time she jumps in the middle of an adult situation and gets hurt. But anyway, the allegation here is that Vi really had no issue hitting her and didn't stop because of it. Isha quite literally bites Vi on her wraps. You know, the part of her that is probably in constant pain from months of pit fighting and no self care. Also, Jinx and Vi literally stop at the same time when they realize what happened.
Tumblr media
Also, lets not forget this handy-dandy little moment where Vi quite literally throws herself in front of Isha to save her from Vander:
Tumblr media
Additionally, to allege that the reason Caitlyn reacts to such an extreme agree is simply that Vi robbed her of her choice is to deny the absolutely crushing trauma Caitlyn has been/is dealing with. She is literally face to face with the monster of her nightmares, and is being denied her revenge. Every fight-or-flight, primal, lizard brain part of her is screaming that Jinx is the most dangerous thing in the world, and the woman Caitlyn loves is standing in front of her. I go more into the signs of Caitlyn's traumatic episode in another document but to suffice it to say, it doesn't seem like Caitlyn was really aware of exactly what all was going on in that chamber. Vi called her repeatedly and all Caitlyn could say was "move! she's not getting away again!" never responding to anything else Vi was saying. Caitlyn fired her rifle twice striking Vi's gauntlet once even and was not deterred. She is NOT doing okay.
Tumblr media
2. "I thought you were different.. but your not. It's her blood in your veins"- whoo boy. Okay, The users are more or less defending Caitlyn's anger and her saying this as her realizing that ultimately Vi's loyalty is with Jinx because they believe Vi stopped her because of Jinx, and by extension someone who has done A-Z of fucked up things to Caitlyn. Again I am just about the furthest thing from a Jinx apologist but I don't have time for the list at the moment.
I will repeat, did Vi stop it because she saw Powder in Jinx's face, and because her sister told her she was glad it was her killing her? Entirely possible. But ultimately what it comes down it Caitlyn is enraged because Jinx got away, and Caitlyn's solution to that was to take the shot with a hex tech rifle that had been glitching, and could have killed a child.
No as to what Caitlyn actually said, because one of their points was about Vi's comeback. A few points:
A- Caitlyn knows all of Vi and Jinx history by now including Vi's crushing guilt over what happened
B- Caitlyn knows Vi carries the guilt for her mother's death because Vi asked Caitlyn not to shoot
C- Caitlyn knows what it meant for Vi to put on the uniform and come here with her, and still doubts her
D- Caitlyn literally alleges that Vi is no different than Jinx, who has caused all of this pain and suffering, because her blood is the same, tainted in the same way
3. "Than why are you the one acting like her?"- Essentially here they are just saying that Vi was looking to wound, looking for the low blow, and that not enough attention was given to how fucked up this was to say, especially because Caitlyn had tried to do all of this the right way.
Can I do the right thing for the wrong reason? Is it bad that I'm making friends with my demons, and Living by a couple deadly sins Just to make sure I finish what you began And I ain't afraid to lose a life or ten If it means that I get to win in the end (woo) So I'ma do this on my own, step into the danger zone Pull the pin and watch it blow! (Arcane Hellfire)
I am not saying it wasn't a fucked up thing to say. I am saying Yall are missing the point. Vi was afraid of Caitlyn changing because she saw the violence and darkness in her. Because while yes they are doing everything the right way in the lanes technically, for Caitlyn its all for the wrong reasons. She isn't there to help the undercity, she is on a quest for revenge. And as such is surrendering her morals and values alittle at a time.
4. Caitlyn hit Vi impulsively after Vi realized she overstepped/Cait never learned her strength or how to hold back-
As Caitlyn is walking away and Vi says "why are you the one acting like her?!" she grabs Cait's arm firmly at first then relaxes her grip to a more gentle one. Caitlyn sits and breathes for a solid ten seconds before hitting Vi. That's not exactly a reflexive action. Also, Caitlyn has demonstrated a tremendous proficiency with her rifle and with increasing hand-to-hand combat over the course of the show. She knew what she was doing, and she knew where she hit her. Now was Caitlyn also drowning in the middle of a total emotional overload. Yes indeed. But this was not a shock response strike. She chose to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for a few points outside of the breakup that were mentioned:
Vi was wrong to suggest that Caitlyn did not understand during their conversation about Vi putting on the badge-
Well we can do this simply. Lets compare the two.
A- Vi was standing there in sight of her parents bodies as the people responsible were still there stalking around the smoke. The people responsible all dress the same way and their look is a symbol of their institution. Now she is being asked to dress like them.
B- Caitlyn was however far away and only saw the rocket launched and smash into the building. This of course would still be very traumatic. But for better or worse there is only one Jinx and her look is her look. Unless Vi was asking Cait to put on a half-eaten circus tent, I don't think we are in the same area here.
2. Vi has a tendency to dismiss Caitlyn's trauma when something more viscerally related to her own loss is going on-
The example they provided was the conversation I listed above. Vi has literally stayed there to be there and support Caitlyn even after being yelled at by Tobias. She is supportive of catching jinx and wants to help right up until Cait offers the badge. And even after that blow up, in the wake of the memorial attack Vi shelves her own issues and agrees to be an enforcer anyways.
3. Fandom keeps giving Vi a pass like anyone from Piltover can do no wrong-
The idea of this fandom giving Vi a pass is completely and totally laughable. I'm sorry but it is. There is still a whole legion of us who blame a fifteen year old girl kneeling over her father's body, who just saw her brothers die, who just held off a legion of armed Silco goons and barely survived, for ruining Powder during one bad moment and turning her into jinx. Aside from Caitlyn's commander Arc Vi is probably the least understood character in the entire fandom.
PSSSSSST.. If it helps, they don't do redemption arcs for characters who were never in the wrong in the first place. Have a great day!

Rose Recaps 2024 - Korea
Starting my list of favourite shows with Korea. They gave us so much angst, and some of them I still haven't fully been able to shake. Let's go.
The one with the existential dread
Love For Love's Sake
Tumblr media
I was not ready. Not that I think there was a way I would be, but still. I was floored. It was an ambitious concept but executed pretty much flawlessly. If they had a bit more time, I think the world building could've benefited a little, cause there were parts that felt a bit rushed but overall the themes were well conveyed throughout. This show can be interpreted in a variety of ways, and one can take from it different things. For so much of this show I was filled with anxiety and sadness, but by the end the overall message of self love healed a small part of me. The visuals were strong and the actors did a wonderful job.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media
Obvious perhaps, but no one can deny the beauty of this moment. Just the pure relief and joy I felt, made it one of my favourites of the year.
The one with all the yearning
The Time of Fever
Tumblr media
I was so normal about this show. First let me just say, that I don't think of this show as a prequel. I know it is one, but I prefer to think of it as its own thing. This show drove me crazy. I suffered through it twice, and I kept finding new things that drove me insane. The yearning, the pining, the love these two have for each other that can only be rivalled by the fear they both share. Hotae is afraid of his feelings, because he can't understand them or can't accept them, but he also can't resist the pull. Donghee is afraid because he does understand, but he also knows what it means, so he needs to protect his friend from all the ugliness he himself has endured. And the actors just portrait these emotions so well. Truly some of the best acting I've seen this year. The camera work is outstanding, the framing always intentional and the lighting is good enough to break your heart.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media
The heater between them??? Incredible. I'm still in awe of this whole scene. From the feeding of the orange slice to the kiss itself and their body language right to their expressions at the end. It was a flawless scene.
The one with all the trauma
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo
Tumblr media
Every week I was filled with excitement and dread waiting for new episodes. It was a painful journey for them and for me. Such a raw depiction of how trauma follows you long after you left the place where you endured it behind you. Closure is such an overused word, because it always sounds like there's a switch you can flip, and you're fine. Like it's that simple. The way Dohoe carried all of the abuse with him, how he shaped his life around it unconsciously, all along believing he was healing himself, it was heartbreaking to watch. And JuYeong. The boy who waited. The boy who understood and gave him the space to heal. Time stopped for 12 years for both of them. But they have a lifetime left to heal together and find happiness in the simple act of loving and being loved by each other.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The symbolism destroyed me. The cross, the wall, the confession. Masterful.
The one that wasn't like the others
Love In The Big City
Tumblr media
I don't even know what to say any more. It was an amazing adaption. Stellar acting, great script, gorgeous visuals. It's messy and it all feels so real. Young is one of my favourite characters of all time, both the one from the book and the one from the series. I wanted to hug him and hit him over the head at several points. I did appreciate the bigger presence of the T-aras, it left me more hopeful than the novel. I'm still not over the break up though.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media
The honesty, the unconditional acceptance. To watch Young experience it for the first time was overwhelming.
Tumblr media
Honourable mention to Boys Be Brave that I adored. And the only reason is not in this list is because of the second couple. They needed more time, and even with the time they had I thought the writing of that storyline was a bit messy. But I loved the mains.
Tumblr media
See you soon with Taiwan, maybe. šŸ’œ

The reason why I keep bringing up media literacy and bad faith criticisms is because of things like this. Follow along if you can!
Tumblr media
^^^ā€”ā€”ā€”
I saw this post the other day where this person suggested that the reason Vi didnā€™t get as much character development was because the writers didnā€™t know what to do with her. Thatā€™s a pretty bold statement to make. Iā€™ve certainly not heard any of the writers express that opinion at all. So where did this idea come from? What interview provided us with that look behind the scenes?
Luckily someone asked for a source, and they obliged! And my friendsā€¦ this gets weirderā€¦
The ā€œsourceā€ ends up being this game journalism article:
Tumblr media
This is an entire article dedicated to basically interpreting, reframing, and summarizingā€¦. A tweet.
A single tweet by Christian Linke.
An entire article that took his response to a question WAY out of proportion and infused it with more meaning than was intended.
Hereā€™s the original tweet. A user askā€™s about VIā€™s character being less prominent, and his response is basically ā€œwe had a lot of charactersā€ which is true. There were a lot of characters to squeeze in appropriate amounts of time for. Vi included. Hereā€™s the original tweet:
Tumblr media
Itā€™s really not much at all, is it? This isnā€™t him admitting they didnā€™t know what to do with her, or that they abandoned her storyline or anything like that. All he said was there were a lot of characters and as a result Vi got a little less screen time as a matter of fact. Nothing more, nothing less.
But hereā€™s how the game article summarized things:
Tumblr media
^^^ā€”ā€”ā€”
So do you see what Iā€™m getting at here? A fan asks a reasonable question, and Linke gives a very straightforward answer. This is picked up and interpreted by the games journalist reporter and given far greater weight that it deserves, including a flashy headline. People see this and add even MORE of their own personal biases and exaggerated opinions and spread that aroundā€¦ and before long that innocent tweet somehow is ā€œproof they didnā€™t know what to do with Vi and thatā€™s why her arc was reduced to X thing I didnā€™t like!ā€
Swirling around Season 2 of Arcane is this weird game of telephone where with each step of the journey the original message is getting lost and distorted and twisted around. Unfortunately when a quote is this ambiguous, it leaves it open to interpretation. Iā€™ve seen this same tweet be used to explain why every character had ā€œbad writing.ā€
And the games journalist isnā€™t technically wrong in their coverageā€¦ after all, all they did was post the tweet and then re-summarize the same tweet. But by taking what the fan asked and twisting it into ā€œArcane lead explains why Vi felt like a side characterā€ as an article headline, theyā€™ve distorted the original interaction and infused it with this twinge of negativity designed to get you angry enough to click on the article.
Arcane Season 2 had a lot of story to tell with a lot of characters. As a result Viā€™s screen time was slightly reduced. Doesnā€™t matter that out of all the characters she has the most screen time across both seasons. Nothing about acknowledging that as a simple fact explains motivations behind the writing of her arc in season 2 at all. It says nothing about her pitfighter phase, her relationship with Caitlyn, or her final battle fight with Jinx and Warwick. But if you were already critical of season 2, this gives you a plausible air of credibility for whatever ā€œreasonsā€ you think they did what they did. And then you just spread this fabrication to the internet where it just snowballs out of control.
So much of the negativity surrounding Arcane Season 2 is the result of this game of telephone and itā€™s really starting to bother me. And when you label overblown garbage like this as ā€œarcane criticalā€ then I genuinely believe youā€™re doing this on purpose and you donā€™t have an original thought in your body. Youā€™re not being critical, youā€™re just letting your ignorance and biases control everything. This is bad faith argument construction at itā€™s worst.

Lu Guang is about to enter the stage. It's not the first night of the representation, he knows his lines perfectly. As a comedian, he has some liberty, he can improve, he can give his own interpretation of the character through emotions and gesture, but ultimately he has to stick to the plot. I also think the curtain has strong connotations. First, he knows what's on both sides. What the audience sees, must see, the fact the show must go on whatever happens behind the scenes. Second, here, the curtain has the 4th wall role, when the boundaries between reality and fiction/fantasy blur. The curtain's motif is a starry sky, and we all know by now that stars are often seen on merch. I personally believe it also gives Lu Guang a godly role, as the "man in the sky" or "who can rip the fabric of the universe." He has great powers, great responsibilities as well, and the fact he's the only one who the countdown posters hint on his powers (the blue eye hidden in the darkness of the curtains), underlines that idea. I'll always refer to Odin whenever Lu Guang's eyes shine in official artworks, so I don't want to be redundant but there it is:
Tumblr media
Behind him, behind the scenes, a real starry sky exists. Does it mean a fake universe is only hiding a real, more complex, one? Does it mean that Lu Guang is playing a fictional character in an ersatz of what was/is, but the reality of tragic and traumatic events still weight on him? Truth be told, Lu Guang thinks he has control over this world, because it exists in a bubble, in a timeloop. In actuality, Lu Guang is playing a game he doesn't know the rules of, but soon enough, the pros are going to show him how it's done. He's in kindergarten, guys.
Is Cheng Xiaoshi banned from the theater or is he the main character of the play? His poster is one we could regard as the play's poster, it involves mystery to be uncovered, and the only way he can do it is through a photograph. There is the banner, telling us it's forbidden to go there. The manor is behind him. It reminds me of SKYFALL in James Bond haha. Going back to the origins. He's truly going through the Fool's journey towards his end.
I'm just going to put this here, no further comment needed:
Tumblr media
I also think it's interesting that Cheng Xiaoshi and Liu Xiao are fully facing us.
Qiao Ling seems to be aware to be both a character and a performer. She is in transition, in contemplation. She has an award for her performance but she seems to be troubled. It's only natural that my mind goes to the portrait of Dorian Gray looking at this artwork. ā€œThe portraitā€ becomes an autonomous, independent entity through mirrors, in which Dorian meets his distorted self: all that is irrational, instinctive and hidden in his own psyche. Through Oscar Wilde's masterpiece, we witness the interplay between self-perception, the fear of aging, and the pursuit of eternal youth. Even though the obvious parallel would be with Narcissus, I do think it echoes Qiao Ling's flower, hyacinth, in the young and fragile existence except in her case, you can add mourning into the mix. The theme also relates to obsession. Qiao Ling is known to put things under the rug, not facing the issues of her shortcomings, but she obviously wants to change that. The "connecting dots" imagery we saw in the PV released lately shows she's on a journey herself.
I still think Xia Fei's role this season is to be only a tool, a face and body to be borrowed, a playable character. He is the star of the show, and his position looks a bit like the Mona Lisa. Meaning, he is and is supposed to be beautiful, perfect, iconic. He is mysterious because we know nothing of him and can only theorize. He personifies whatever we want. That's who he is as well: a mirror to our desires, subjects to interpretation. That is what struck me at first sight, though. Mona Lisa. We also see his shadow and I think it is an important clue. Presenting as a white piece, a pawn, could it be that his dark side is the most overlooked warning of death?
As I mentioned before, Liu Xiao is there to meet his favorite performer, Lu Guang. There is a hint of parasocial relationship there; delusion and obsession. In 2024, being part of the audience is powerful. A spectator has a voice and the mass community, a fandom for example, can influence production and representation. It is an external force and you better want it in your corner. He also could be a producer. Either way, the goal is to impress, please him, and you are probably nothing without him. He has all the access behind the scenes, he can try and recruit, he's here for his own profit and he has the power to destroy careers. Through him, though, it is easier to reach a goal.
Vein, I have little to say. He's shown as wealthy and I think that's a way to tell us he is powerful and takes his power and influence for granted. People like this, they don't like when their authority is challenged. Maybe there is some chinese culture at play that I don't know about. We often forget Link Click is a chinese media but social and cultural context bleed into the story more often than not so I'll be happy to know a chinese myth is hidden in plain sight there.

my interpretation of what Tillā€™s flower art means to him!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
before the patreon post, i wrote down my interpretations of the flowers for each character (except mizi and luka, as i hadnā€™t gotten to them). i might share the rest eventually. this is a really long rant Since i think about till an insane amount.. this is mostly just me rambling
Tumblr media
the edelweiss.
love, courage, bravery, devotion, purity, strength, resilience. a flower that is difficult to obtain due to it growing in the toughest conditions, though it thrives. ā€œdelicate yet hardy.ā€ theyā€™re used as a gift of selfless and pure love. in folklore, thereā€™s a story of a man risking his life to climb a mountain and obtain the flower to gift to his love, symbolizing sacrifice and devotion. thereā€™s also a story of a queen who fell in love with a shepherd, but he was thrown to his death, and her tears blossomed the edelweiss.
tillā€™s existence is a product of love. he had loved and had been loved all his life. he symbolizes such pure, raw love, having been the only character to experience love prior to anakt. maternal love, the most unconditional and pure bond. he craves that freedom heā€™s felt before, his resilience keeping him going.
till is a strong and pure of heart character. despite the tough living conditions he was subjected to, he always stayed true to himself, never letting the segyein keep him down. he was the only person to constantly defy the segyein despite all the punishment and abuse. he goes against them whenever he possibly can, outright killing an alien in round 2. heā€™s a symbol of bravery and courage.
till has been devoted to mizi all his life, going as far as to sacrifice his own freedom in order to continue ā€œprotectingā€ her. he also directly faced an alien in front of her, to protect her and show that he wonā€™t let the segyein hurt her. the first tale i presented reminded me of how till feels towards mizi, persevering through the toughest conditions in order to demonstrate his pure love. despite all his love for her, he simply admires her from afar, which in my mind pushes the ā€˜devotionā€™ aspect, like a believer devoted to a god.
the second tale reminds me of till both after miziā€™s disappearance and ivanā€™s death. we saw how till acted after mizi. till heavily grieved, nearly unable to hold himself together. he was willing to throw his life away because of how hard it was to live without her. and round 6, i tend to believe ivanā€™s death was when till finally realized how he felt. i believe this because of the wedding theme round 6 is supposed to hold. ivanā€™s sacrifice successfully shifted the narrative of the story, the kiss symbolizing their lives linking. but as soon as this happened, ivanā€™s life came to an end, leaving till to grieve.
the fact that edelweisses are difficult to come by because theyā€™re in such isolated places also reminds me of how till was constantly locked up for his behavior. this can also represent tillā€™s severe struggles with avoidance. he kept both mizi and ivan at a distance all his life, isolating himself from them emotionally as he heavily fears intimacy for a multitude of reasons.
till is the only one with chains surrounding him, which can symbolize a couple of things. the immediate thought i had was how he was constantly oppressed by the segyein, locked away and forcibly dehumanized all throughout his life. being tied down was his norm, and he got the most reprimand from it. this can also symbolize his emotional isolation, as i stated previously. besides this, iā€™m not too sure what the chains could represent here.
Tumblr media
a thing i should mention is that edelweisses are actually mentioned in unknown till the endā€¦ how cool
this isnā€™t my most in depth analysis, i was mostly just dumping my thoughts.. let me know if youā€™d like to see the thoughts i had on ivan, sua, or hyunaā€™s flower art!

John Price's Home
Tumblr media
āœØ John Priceā€™s Home - My Sims 4 Take šŸŽ®
Hi, everyone! šŸ‘‹ Remember how I mentioned in the A/N of my last chapter that the house described was inspired by @eleu22's moodboard for John Priceā€™s home? Well, I loved it so much that I had to try my hand at bringing it to lifeā€”in The Sims 4! šŸ˜‚
For those who might not remember, the A/N was from Chapter 11 of my Papa Bear Material story. Itā€™s the chapter where John brings you to his home for the first time to spend the weekend together as a couple. That chapter was such a special turning point in their relationship, and I wanted to make sure the house really captured the warmth, cosiness, and charm of Johnā€™s character.
Whilst reading this, I want you to imagine John Price taking you here šŸ˜ˆā€”his home, his space, his rules. Just picture it: the cozy fireplace crackling, the scent of whisky lingering in the air, and that intense look he gives when itā€™s just the two of you. Go on, let your mind wander to the things heā€™d doā€¦ because trust me, heā€™s thought about it too.
This is my interpretation of what Captain Priceā€™s home might look like, from the cozy interior to the overall vibe. I was inspired by @eleu22's visionā€”their moodboard really hit the spot! While I agreed with much of their design, I also put my own spin on it, tweaking it to suit how I imagine the Captainā€™s space.(So itā€™s more ā€œinspired byā€ than a full recreation!)
Hereā€™s a breakdown of what youā€™ll see:
šŸ“ Structure - So, letā€™s start with the foundation of the place. The floors are a mix of old vintage tiles and polished hardwoodā€”well-maintained and perfectly worn in with years of use, especially after John renovated the place. The walls? Theyā€™re made of rustic stone and sturdy brick, well-structured and kept in excellent condition. Captain Price inherited the house from his grandparents, and during his renovations, he made sure to preserve its warmth and charm while adding his own personal touch. You can almost feel the history and legacy of his family in every corner, a tribute to the generations that have lived here.
šŸ“ Living Room - Warm, inviting, and just the right amount of rugged charmā€”because you know Price would keep it comfortable but not overly fancy. He has a cast iron fireplace installed underneath the original one, something he added during renovations for practicality and efficiency. The room is filled with old furniture, lots of books, and pictures of his late family, reflecting a deep sense of nostalgia. Price inherited his cottage from his grandparents, who originally owned the place. He lives somewhere around Kingston or Richmondā€”not too far from Central London but close enough to enjoy the woodland charm of the outskirts.
Thereā€™s also a door in the living room that leads directly to the garden outdoor area, adding a touch of tranquillity to the cosy space.
On the other end of the room, youā€™ll find a collection of vinyl records, a player, and an amplifier. I can absolutely see Captain Price brooding on the couch over his plans with a whisky or bourbon in hand, maybe even smoking one of his nice cigars, as he listens to Annie Lennoxā€™s ā€œMoney Canā€™t Buy Itā€ or something from Tears for Fears, The Police, Sting, Duran Duran, John Waite, or Spandau Ballet classics. And when heā€™s feeling especially emo or introspective, maybe even some modern ones like Adele or Hozier.
Duran Duranā€™s ā€œCome Undoneā€ or ā€œOrdinary World,ā€ and Stingā€™s ā€œFields of Goldā€ or ā€œShape of My Heartā€ would absolutely be on his playlist when heā€™s in one of those pensive moods. (And yes, Adele and Hozier have vinyls of their albums, and oh boy, they sound so good!) šŸ˜
šŸ“ Kitchen - Functional and homey, with a touch of practicality that screams "This man cooks bacon in a cast-iron skillet." Itā€™s a rustic space filled with lots of old items, including his grandparents' porcelain plates, some newer ones, and a vintage stove. Thereā€™s even a little porcelain chicken figurine thatā€™s been there for agesā€”he finds it cute, so itā€™s staying. At the centre is a wooden counter island, usually covered in food, seasonings, garnishes, and maybe a bottle of whisky or two. This man makes a proper snack.
Tumblr media
šŸ“ Dining Room - The dining room exudes rustic charm, with another iron cast fireplace that doubles as an oven, perfect for cooking and grilling. Above the fireplace, a collection of herbs hangs, adding a fresh, earthy touch to the room. On the left side of the fireplace, thereā€™s a sturdy hutch or cabinet, stocked with all sorts of fine spirits and selected wines. Next to it is a well-stocked drink cart, ready for any occasion.
On the counter, a cheese dome sits, showcasing a selection of his favourite cheeses, because this man is absolutely obsessed with cheese. Under the cabinet, thereā€™s a collection of different glasses for various types of alcohol. Two framed vintage posters hang on the wallā€”one detailing British cheeses and the other offering basic cheese knowledge, both adding a touch of humour and character to the space.
An old chandelier hangs above the center of the room, casting a warm, soft light, completing the intimate, cozy atmosphere.
šŸ“ Bedroom - A simple but intimate space that feels like a retreat after long missions. The room features a cosy, old queen-size bed with vintage charm. At each end of the bed, thereā€™s an old end table. One holds a book and a tray of water, while the other has a tablet, probably for late-night reading or catching up on work. A dresser sits nearby, topped with a vase of fresh flowers and an old replica painting of a famous artwork. At the foot of the bed is a comfy ottoman, perfect for kicking back after a long day, and an old chair is positioned beside the bed, as if ready for quiet moments of reflection. A large window lets in plenty of sunlight, warming up the room with natural light and creating the perfect atmosphere for relaxation.
Tumblr media
šŸ“ Study - The door to Captain Priceā€™s study is cleverly disguised as a bookshelf. Itā€™s the perfect example of understated secrecyā€”who wouldā€™ve guessed that behind the shelves of books lies one of his most brooding spaces? A place for the Captain to retreat and get even more pensive.
Against one wall, thereā€™s a shelf where his most precious drinks and cigars are kept, along with a stash of biscuits and cookies (because, yes, heā€™s got a sweet toothā€”donā€™t let the gruff exterior fool you). All of this is strictly for his own enjoyment, mind youā€”no sharing.
His main desk, made of dark wood, is set up with the kind of tech Simonā€”his favourite, and letā€™s face it, only tech-savvy lieutenantā€”would be proud of. Simon installed a desktop computer, added extra memory and a camera for his calls, and even set him up with a high-quality mic. He even picked out a nice pair of headphones for those brooding music sessions, where Captain Price likes to sip whisky, smoke cigars, and disappear into his thoughts. And just for extra fun, Simon also set up his music app account. (Yes, Captain Price still insists on listening to his vinyls downstairs, but hey, heā€™s trying with the tech stuff.)
In the corner, thereā€™s a telescope pointed toward the window. When the Captain wants to look at the stars (or brood about somethingā€”again), heā€™s got a perfect view. This too was set up by Simon. Why Simon? Well, because he's Captain Priceā€™s favourite lieutenant, of courseā€”or, more accurately, his favourite IT support. Remember that time in the game when Kyle asked, ā€œWhy canā€™t it be you instead of me going in?ā€ when they were about to assault a location? Price just casually responded with, ā€œThatā€™s why they call me Captain and you Sergeant.ā€ Same deal with Simonā€”though in this case, Simon got a nice haul of rare whisky, bourbon, cheeses, and, naturally, cookies, all for setting up tech in one go. And when Price calls him in for IT support, Simon always tries to act like heā€™s somewhere else, hiding from the task, but we all know he secretly enjoys it (and the perks, obviously).
Books. There are lots of books on the tall bookshelf, as the Captain likes to readā€”mostly military thrillers, obviously, but donā€™t be surprised to find a few spy novels by John le CarrĆ© or Frederick Forsyth hidden in there. The shelf isnā€™t just limited to that genre, though. Youā€™ll also find a collection of cookbooks (because, yes, Price can cook!), fishing guides, gardening books, and even some on carpentryā€”because heā€™s always been handy with his hands. Atop the bookshelf sits a vintage typewriter in a glass caseā€”his grandparentsā€™ typewriter, which he keeps as a display piece. Itā€™s a touch of nostalgia, a little piece of his past that he canā€™t quite let go of.
Next to the bookshelf is a small study table with his laptop. This is where the Captain taps away at his keyboard, writing stories in his downtime. (Who knew, right? Captain Price, aspiring writer, channeling his inner Andy McNab.) Maybe one day, when heā€™s feeling confident, heā€™ll share a manuscript with someoneā€”just donā€™t expect it to be anytime soon.
šŸ“ Garden/Outdoor Area - Lush, peaceful, and perfect for a man who appreciates some fresh air and quiet moments. Itā€™s filled with trees, shrubs, and greenery, and thereā€™s even a small stretch of the River Thames running behind the propertyā€”a little slice of tranquility amidst the chaos of life.
I had so much fun building this and imagining every little detail. I hope you enjoy this peek into what I think John Priceā€™s home might look likeā€”Sims 4 style! Let me know your thoughts, and if youā€™ve got your own interpretations, Iā€™d love to see them! And if youā€™d like me to do one for another character, drop your suggestions in the comments below! šŸ”āœØ

I find Rolan difficult to write and I need tips for my uhm...self-indulgent fanfic
Oooh!! Fun, I love a self-indulgent fanfic. Youā€™ll have to be sure to post it in the rolan tag!
Iā€™d say the best advice I could give is to just think about what Rolanā€™s character and personality actually is. The reason I find him so fun to write is because, unlike the companions, he has just enough character to be a well written character, but isnā€™t central enough to make it so you canā€™t write him in your own interpretation. Every Rolan fic Iā€™ve ever read has a very different version of Rolan, including the two Iā€™ve writtenā€”not everyone will agree, but such is the nature of fandom.
As for forming an idea of what heā€™s like, you can also look into other fics and especially headcanon posts to really inform your idea of him and also build out his character more. When writing characters in general, you want to have a good idea of small detailsā€”things that make a character feel like a person and not just a trope. For example, it would be easy to say ā€œheā€™s grumpy and cockyā€ and interpret that as who he is. But then, looking more into his character, you can decide that thatā€™s all for show and to hide insecurities, and focus on this trait to develop his character.
As for a more practical tip, look into how he actually speaks in the game (thereā€™s a YouTube video with all his voice lines that Iā€™ve watched to death) and what words he likes to useā€”e.g. ā€˜zurganā€™ ā€˜wretchedā€™ ā€˜damnationā€™ā€”and also look into when he used those words. For example, when heā€™s drunk and grieving, he tells you to ā€œsod offā€, which is a very colloquial thing to say, especially from someone who seems like he thinks heā€™s intellectually above others. From that verbiage alone. you could draw hundreds of conclusions about his character.
Also, consult with the several hundreds of Rolan professionals across tumblr. šŸ˜‚ We all have different ideas of who he is and how he talks. Tonnes of us still write about him, @lemonsrosesandlavender @redroomroaving @reverieblondie @sorceresssundries to name but a few.
I hope this all has helped. ā˜ŗļøā¤ļø Good luck with the Rolan brain rot!

Seeing hot takes about Wei Wuxian's personality and confidence levels floating around again so thought I'd chime in with my own.
Wei Wuxian does not lack confidence. In fact he is often overly confident, as noted by himself post resurrection.
I think his biggest issues are
1. He views kindness towards himself as transactional. He must pay back any kindness as best he can. However, his own kindness is free of charge. Remember what others do for you, not what you do for others.
2. If someone has to get hurt, he'd rather it be him. This, i believe is the core (cough) of the hero complex Jiang Cheng scolds him for. Its okay if he gets hurt because its him. And he knows he can handle it. And if he can handle it, he has to.
3. He has a fundamental, deep set mistrust of authority figures. His own experiences teach him thst its better to ask forgiveness than permission because youll get punished either way. If you want something done itnis your responsibility. His support from those in power growing up was inconsistent which makes it hard to ask for help.
On paper, these line up with a lot of what the reader may experience as anxiety or lack of confidence/self-worth in their own life. Overcompensation, inability to ask for help, self-sacrifice and the like. The issue is that the motive isnt the same, even if the symptoms are similar. The reason people, including myself at times, depict wwx as being anxious or lacking self-worth i think is mostly projection turned fanon. Its cathartic and easier to relate to.
Wwx does not see himself as worth less of than others in his life. In fact thats part of what raises some other characters hackles. How dare this son of a servant act like he's one of us?!
I think a lot of his issue is really about debt (that he will repay if it kills him(spoiler: it does)), overconfidence in his own ability (though i think he is forcing that out of desperation at the end of his first life because he can't afford to be wrong (spoiler: he was wrong)), a lack in confidence in the skill or motives of others (not completely unjustified ngl), and a desire to keep those he love from harm as much as he can (success may vary).

"The resident PR Management ghoul" I have this headcanon that after Era 3 Special got transferred to human/ghoul resources and now has to deal with endless questions from siblings of sin (and a specific cardinal) about the ministry and its ghouls. Every week there's a new issue that he has to fix because some of the ghouls felt a bit mischievous. He's still considered as Sister Imperator's lapdog though

80s britpunk Cater is such an incredible direction to take. his Sid Vicious jacket! his little british police cap! I wouldn't have anticipated that going full-on Sex Pistols would be his alternate self but it is SO fitting actually. šŸ˜

Shen Yuan getting transported into pidw isn't "the system punishing him for being a lazy internet hater," but instead representative of "step 1 of the creative process: getting so mad at something you decide to go write your own fucking book" in this essay I will
#svsss#scum villian self saving system#shen qingqiu#shen yuan#the fact that people think scum villain#-a series that examines and criticizes common tropes in fiction-#is somehow against criticism or being a little hater is wild to me#especially since shen qingqiu never gets punished for being a hater#heck- he's still a little hater by the end of the series#he mostly gets punished for treating life like a play and like he and the people around him are characters#(or in other words- he suffers for denying his own wants and emotions and his own sense of empathy)#I think some of y'all underestimate how much writing/art is inspired by creaters being little haters#like example off the top of my head-#the author of Iron Widow has been pretty vocal about the book being inspired by their hatred of Darling in the Franxx#I think my interpretation of Shen Yuan's transmigration is also supported by the fact that this series is an examines writing processes#side note- though i understand why people say Shen Yuan is lazy and think its a valid take it still doesnt sit right with me#i am probably biased because my own experiences with chronic pain and depression and isolation#but ya- i dont think Shen Yuan is lazy so much as he is deeply lonely and feels purposeless after denying parts of himself for 20ish years#like yall remember the online fandom boom from covid right?#being stuck completely alone in bed while feeling like shit for 20 days straight does shit to your brain#the fact that no one came to check on him + he wasn't exactly upset about leaving anyone behind supports the isolation interpretation too#+in the skinner demon arc he describes his life of being a faker/inability to stop being a faker now that he's Shen Qingqiu#as ā€œso bland he's tempted to throw salt on himselfā€ and ā€œall he could do is lay around and wait for deathā€ (<-paraphrasing)#bro wants to be doing stuff but is stuck in paralysis from repeatedly following scrips made by other people#another point on ā€œShen Yuan isnā€™t lazyā€ is just the sheer amount of studying that man does#also he did graduate college- how lazy can he really be#he doesnt know what hes doing but he at least tries to actively train his students#and he actually works on improving his own cultivation + spends quite a bit of time preping the mushroom body thing#+he's experiencing bouts of debilitating chronic pain throughout all this#but ya tldr: Shen Yuan's transmigration is an encouragement to write and not a punishment and also i dont think its fair to call him lazy

Holy shit I love your Dirk interpretations, it's so true and I could talk about this shit forever. I feel like another part of his character that people seem to forget (along with Roxy for some reason) is that he's from the future in solitude in an apocalyptic wasteland. I just see that part of his character always removed which is disappointing because I feel like that's a pretty big part, especially regarding his themes around technology, his brother's theme of Time, his own isolation, and how he plays in the vastness of the universe and spacetime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Art I drew related to the subject because I like to respond to asks with art.
But absolutely. I certainly understand where the lack of discussion over his isolation + upbringing comes from, considering a majority of the fanbase that I have seen builds their ideas based on their own version of postcanon. Iā€™m not entirely sure how that would be fixed, but certainly even in the somewhat recent past I would see a lot more content regarding his upbringing both literally and symbolically. I donā€™t have much to add regarding the things youā€™ve mentioned, because they just are what they are. Dirk being confined to a singular room left to him by a father figure he never met, in a future where the only other person left on the planet is someone he cannot pursue a relationship of because of himself, with purely 3 robots to keep him companion, one being an exact replica of his own brain who is *also* trapped inside a pair of glasses, is about as literal as it gets to me.
The contrast to me involving the flooded, organic world in comparison to the little speckle of Dirkā€™s apartment packed with the dude and his technics is not only a representation of his isolation and entrapment within himself, but also of his lack of control. I think his obsession with & themes of control are a direct product in the case of Dirk specifically *of* this kind of upbringing. His themes of technology are also related to his themes around control. So much of his character is actually revolved around this to me like so much. Dirk is so deeply disconnected from humanity in every way and so much of his character + symbolism is based around that.
It doesnā€™t even have to be about the symbolism or anything though. Itā€™s just pretty *interesting* in the literal sense that he lives in the middle of the ocean in the future. Thereā€™s not only a lot to theorise on to do with his young life there, but on how it might affect him in the way he acts for the rest of his life. The latter part is probably what I see mentioned the most by people talking about Dirk regarding this, Iā€™m surprised I donā€™t see more discussion on the former too though. I really ought to actually talk more about Homestuck stuff on here. I will do it myself.
Roxy & Dirkā€™s relationship is largely ignored though because there is a narrative a certain demographic spreads that Dirk resented and blamed Roxy for her interest in him, and thus too many people believe that their relationship was or would continue to be an abusive one. Realistically, I believe itā€™s important to acknowledge that the way Roxy treated Dirk regarding his homosexuality wasnā€™t right while still acknowledging the obvious amount of respect and admiration Dirk had for Roxy. I mean we have a huge piece of dialogue from their post trickster mode conversations on the quest beds from Dirk purely stating how he feels about Roxy that people completely ignore somehow. I think this usually happens to characters that are women though. I know everyone says it, but it is true. Jane gets the exact same treatment of boiling her down to solely her negative aspects. The things I see completely mischaracterising both of them are horrific.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean how much more explicit can it get that their relationship is obviously very important to Dirk? But I digress. I think the best or I should say ā€œmost interestingā€ interpretations of their relationship usually come from DirkRoxy shippers actually.
I would be interested to hear about Dirkā€™s relation to his brotherā€™s theme of time though. I donā€™t have any thoughts on this and I donā€™t recall ever hearing anyone talk about it before. If you or anyone else would be willing to enlighten me Iā€™d be thrilled.

in defense of kabumisuā€¦ā€¦..
addressing things I see people say about why kabru being shipped w mithrun is ā€˜badā€™ or why their canon relationship ā€˜doesnā€™t mean anythingā€™ while also clearing up misconceptions of the characters some fans have
listen it keeps popping up and I just gotta do this or my brain will melt (if you donā€™t see it around then god I wish that were me) thereā€™s an age gap!- erm thereā€™s also an age gap in farcille (ily), the most popular ship in the series...also chilchuck looks like a kid but a lot of fans recognize him as a dilf because of his relative age, so there should be no age gap discourse among adult characters because it feels so conditional tbh
kabru taking care of mithrun is racist!- marcille likes to take care of others as well. is that sexist, or just an aspect of her character?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
kabru isnā€™t treated like a servant, waiting on mithrun hand and footā€¦I mean he gives mithrun a foot massage but no one told him to do all that lmfao
he's also not the only one to care for mithrun. pattadol is shown to worry for him and milsril was the one to start taking care mithrun in the first place after heā€¦...yā€™know. speaking of which-
they probably met when kabru was a kid!- neither of them showed signs of recognizing each other the entire time mithrun was introduced nor when they were together. and im pretty sure KABRU of all people would show some kind of recognition if they'd met before. it's kabru!!! the people person!!! mr. "i-noted-down-50+-characters-in-this-dude's-backstory-for-fun-and-actually-enjoy-social-gatherings"
you would think some kind of memory would come back to him especially after hearing mithrunā€™s backstory if milsril had even told kabru about him as a kid. but nope. itā€™s just fan speculation unless there's a side comic suggesting otherwise that i haven't seen
mithrun doesn't care about kabru, his shapeshift double looked like shit!- it's obviously because of mithrun's (then) lack of desires that it looked like that, but they really grow on each other
i think it's safe to assume it'd look more like kabru after they spent so much time together (also laios can barely even remember kabru's name..also saw his face multiple times and didnā€™t recognize him when they talked for the first time)
mithrun is racist!- heā€™s actually the least likely character to be racist since he lost his desires and that includes a desire for superiority over others. he even calls his past self out on that part of himself. the other elves in that side comic were being just as racist to shorter lived races but just didnā€™t use ā€˜outdated slursā€™
(unfortunately literally every main character in dunmeshi is at least a lil prejudiced, but I believe itā€™s worldbuilding and a sign of the times rather than a reason ryoko kui is giving to hate each character)
taking care of others is a pain in the ass!- saying this as a reason kabru and mithrun shouldn't be together is basically saying disabled people shouldn't be allowed to have romantic relationships because they're a "burden"...if someone is actually willing to put in the work, then let them be.
that's not even all of their relationship, mithrun is the fighter of their duo and kabru would've been killed by the shapeshifter or something if he'd fallen down the hole on his own since he sucks at fighting monsters. mithrun helps collect ingredients for cooking every time, too (barometz fruits and griffin egg). he pulls his weight and then some!! i feel like people forget that part of mithrun a lot somehow.
+senshi literally cooks for everyone all time. it's kind of an important aspect of the narrative.
+also, while it is a popular fan thing I see around that kabru handfeeds mithrun, he literally never does lol this is mithrun using his own hands to eat:
Tumblr media
also here we have him washing his own body
Tumblr media
just saying because people like to treat mithrun like a baby even though the narrative respects him as a capable adult who also has special needs because of an accident. heā€™s captain for a reason
kabru hates taking care of mithrun!- not exactly, he was initially surprised and put off but got used to it quickly. iā€™m sure heā€™s grateful for all the times mithrun saved him from a monster and teleported them out of danger as well
Tumblr media
he even starts doing ā€œunnecessaryā€ things for mithrunā€™s comfort and safety like when mithrun pushes himself too hard fighting, even after his mission to take care of him was complete when the canaries came back
here is even kabru resting while mithrun keeps watch (mithrun let him sleep for 5 hours before waking him up from the nightmare earlier, too):
Tumblr media
there's nothing more to their relationship!- they actually have had a very tight and consistent dynamic since they met and they incite the most change within each other by the end. kabru is the one who inspires mithrun to create new desires so he doesn't waste away, and mithrun is the first person we see kabru being genuine with and it leads him to be more honest with others by the end instead of tiptoeing around everyone all the time (that mask was also the reason some ppl initially disliked kabruā€¦)
kabruā€™s relationship with mithrun is honestly so important for his character and vice versa, but itā€™s often disregarded because of one over exaggerated aspect of it (an aspect that isnā€™t even the first way they interact with each other) or because people want to just straight up ignore it for some reason šŸ„²šŸ„²
kui dedicates many panels to them that don't particularly serve the narrative as a whole in order to demonstrate this and i think that's pretty significant
you're taking this too seriously!- as if i'm the first person in the world to be crazy about a ship or the characters šŸ˜ i love analyzing text and it's upsetting to see them mischaracterized when kui lays out the characters so clearly and deliberately
also they end up touching each other like all the time and have the kind of canon validation most ppl can only dream of lol i feel so insane look at this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this is just when they're first getting to know each other cuz there's a fuckload more
kinda hard to explain how i don't actually need them to get married or whatever but i'd die on this hill for them and i enjoy their dynamic immensely
haha you thought you were reading ship discourse but it was actually a character analysis šŸ¤ŖšŸ¤ŖšŸ¤Ŗ
also donā€™t somehow take this to mean I think anyone has to ship them, I just need everyone to understand these accusations kind of donā€™t make sense especially when they can also apply to other pairs or characters
bonus kabru just looking at mithrun:

psa that the day there are no jgy stans left on tumblr dot com is the day i am dead
but rest assured i'll go to my grave exactly as i lived: obnoxiously proclaiming to everyone within earshot how great lianfang-zun is. narratively, metaphorically, spiritually. sexually, too, like why limit myself. i like to keep my options open
#the spirit of su minshan possessed me for a minute there but like. i'm fine with it#jin guangyao#he did crimes??? good for him šŸ˜Œ#editing this post to add that while the tone here is clearly joking#i really am fundamentally still engaged with this fandom#and with this book#almost exlcusively because of my enjoyment of jgy#even xiyao is secondary for me like i love it and i'm ride or die for it obvs#but jgy as a character is the main draw for me. and he would have me by the throat even if there was no zewu-jun#(tho i think jgy's life would be more depressing for his absence obviously)#but he is just. /clenches my fists!!!#THE most compelling character in the story and i cannot stop thinking about him!! cannot will not!!#who else in this book has his range? who else can be the doe-eyed idealist AND the spy with blood on his hands who ends a war?#who else is two different greek tragedies and at least two separate shakespearean tragedies rolled into one antagonist#an antagonist who but for the POV of the novel could very easily have been the protagonist#whose moral event horizon is so deeply entwined with his own trauma and abuse that there is no way to meaningfully separate#the violence he does to others from the systemic violence that was done to him for his whole life?#who else in this book manages to get five separate sect leaders utterly obsessed with him no matter how you choose#to interpret that obsession?#no one!!! that's who!!#ain't no one else in the jianghu doing it like lianfang-zun and that's just a goddamn fact
